I did an experiment and place iron nails in copper (II) chloride?

and the iron nails had this solid substance on it... what is it and how was it formed?I did an experiment and place iron nails in copper (II) chloride?
This is called a displacement reaction. Basically a more reactive metal placed in a solution of the salt of a less reactive metal will change places with the less reactive metal.

The iron nail is becoming coated with a layer of copper metal due to the following reaction :-

Fe + CuCl2 ----%26gt; FeCl2 + Cu

the more reactive iron displaces the less reactive copper from its salt and the copper formed coats the iron where it is in contact with the solution.

Hope this is some help.
