Do they give dogs sedatives at petsmart or grooming places to make it easier for them to clip their nails?

i took my dog there today and he is usually more energetic but he seems tired and lazy plus why would it take four hours to do a job which really should take half an hourDo they give dogs sedatives at petsmart or grooming places to make it easier for them to clip their nails?
He's tired because he had a long stressful day. They do not use sedatives, I'ved worked there.

And clearly you know nothing about grooming if you think any dog can be groomed that quickly. Dogs are groomed in stages, first they are pre-clipped if needed, then they are washed, then put in dryers while other dogs are being washed/clipped, and then they are finished. To do a single dog from start to finish takes 2 hours or so, if a groomer did all their dogs in that fashion they could only groom a few dogs a day. To allow for more dogs, they use the stages method, which allows them to do 8 dogs or more per day. You can't even get most dogs washed and dried in half an hour. If you think it's so easy, do it yourself- otherwise stop complaining about the people who do it for you.Do they give dogs sedatives at petsmart or grooming places to make it easier for them to clip their nails?
When I took my Scottie into PetsMart for grooming (now sadly at the Rainbow Bridge), they did not use sedatives.
Petsmart REFUSES to accept dogs that have been sedated for nail trims/grooming/bathing. It is company policy. You can have this done at a vet, but PetSmart does not permit this. I don't know why a nail trim took 4 hours.. a bath might take that long, but nail trims are strictly walk in, walk out services. Pet Smart employees CANNOT put the dog in a kennel if it is only there for a trim!
Nope. Its against policy for Petsmart to accept sedated dogs, or to use sedation. (And any that are ought to be in huge trouble, since the policies are uniform in all stores.)

And, if you were to say something like 'it really should take half an hour' to a groomer to their face, its very likely you'd be slapped around for it. You might be able to get a rough shave with no bath or finishing work for that. Or a shampoo, maybe with a dry if the dog is small. And thats if the dog is good and isn't trying to rip your face off, or trying to fling itself off the table. And... if its really that simple then why don't you do it yourself? ;)

But really, after 2 years of being beat around the head with Petsmarts policies and rules I can assure you that your dog is quite safe there. *g*

Also, its very common for dogs to be bad for their nails. Its just one of those things, and in almost every case they are much worse for their owners. Why? Because owners give up, give in. Plus most aren't overly experianced in it, so the dog can sense if their hesitant or unsure and they take advantage of that.
Usually when groomers take a long time it is because they are busy.

I would HOPE that they would not give them sedatives. That should only be done under a vet's supervision at the vet hospital.

If I had to guess, I would say that he used up a lot of energy with all the barking dogs there and got worn out from all the excitement while waiting to get his nails trimmed.

In the future you might want to try to either wait there while they trim the nails or get the first appointment of the day, that way he isn't waiting as long.
I would think that would be against the law unless it was by a qualified vet and they had your permission. I hope not. Now you have given me something else to worry about.
actually there are petsmarts that will accept sedated dogs, as long as it is one with a Banfield hospital in it. Petco doesnt allow any sedated dogs b/c if the dog goes into shock, theres no way to help immediatly. the petsmart in my town that hasd a vet hospital takes sedated pets and they groom them in the hospital, to ensure safety.

but i am pretty sure they dont actually do the sedation.
They surely don't sedate the dogs, the prior answer of stages is correct. No groomer can live on 4 dogs a day, so staging works best. My Cavalier is a saint at the groomer, the table with the little noose like thing helps. I have a grooming table at home, but have misplaced the noose (groomer that answered above, where can I get one?) When he is put on that table he is 100% better to clip, clean up. I don't wash him often as he hates the dryer and if I don't dry him, he smells worse then when I started. I for one am more than happy to pay a good groomer. My problem is my good groomer has disappeared and I haven't found anyone that does the job she did on him.....so I still search. Sorry, too much info.....

Your dog is probably sedate because he was barking his head off at the groomer for four hours (mine comes home from the groomer and passes out for the rest of the day)
You can help your dog learn to feel more comfortable having his nails trimmed by counter conditioning and desensitizing him to the process. You'll find information about these two training concepts on www.fearfuldogs.com
